Crafty Kitchen

The first thing you should do to make more space in your kitchen is clean out anything you don't need. Then, utilize some of the following space-saving tips to create an organized and appealing space.

Tips:

1. Reduce clutter on the counters by adding under-the-counter appliances. They've been gaining popularity through the years, and their cost has gone down. Plus, there are now under-the-counter can openers, popcorn makers, coffee machines, and countless other under counter appliances.

2. Implement built-ins. Wine racks, spice racks, plate holders, and shelves to hold towels and oven gloves are a good start.

3. Install overhead pan and pot racks. They can be used not only for pots and pans but also cups, dishes, and utensils.

4. Install lazy susans, dividing trays, and extra shelves to keep your existing cabinets organized. With low-to-the-ground shelves, consider putting in rollout shelves to make them more accessible.

5. Utilize wall space. Hang utensils from the walls, and strategically place a bulletin board to keep paperwork that would normally fill an essential drawer.

6. Mount under-cabinet racks to display your stemware or teacups.

7. If your kitchen is large enough, consider purchasing a butcher-block cart on wheels. They are ideal for storing small appliances and baking equipment.

8. Install corner shelves. They're perfect for storing collectibles and cookbooks.

9. Hang wire baskets from the ceiling to hold fresh fruits and vegetables.

10. If counter space is limited, buy a large cutting board to lay over the oven burners or sink to create extra counter space.

11. Consider installing a single-bowl sink instead of a standard-size double-bowl, which would allow for more counter space.

12. Move bulky or seldom-used items into a closet or pantry outside of the kitchen.

13. Create the illusion of space through light. Install under-the-cabinet lighting, and maximize natural lighting by keeping shades open and curtains tied back. Also, keep the walls and cabinets a light color, which will really open up the space.
